XBMC Allwinner A10 – Apologies received & Accepted
Today I posted a teaser on the XBMC forums. This was done by the heart, not the brain. Today Gimli and I received a lengthly email from Allwinner, with apologies and explainations. We both accepted their apologies, but some fact are needed.
- Do I want a native linux XBMC port : Hell yeah
- Did Allwinner apologised : Yes
- Did we accepted it : Yes
Now, like I said before the teaser was posted with the heart and I kind of shot myself in the foot. Everybody wants / expects / thinks we are back on track, but …
- Did we received any new files from Allwinner : No
- If so, is the trust relationship repaired : No
- Do I want to continue this project like this : I REALLY NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT
So in short. Yes we received apologies, yes we accepted them, no we are not back on track, it is unsure if me and / or gimli ever will.
I thought it should only be fair to be transparent about it and is is only fair to Allwinner to put it out in the open to kind of stop the negative spiral we were in.

Sounds good, great move from Allwinner for now.
Did they give any new promises or ETAs ?
nope
Hope you find the motivation to continue !
I understand it’s hard to be manipulate like that just to get more time or to hide something.
But an all community hope on your job, you can see on last post the long thread more than 60 message in only 2 day
it’s not an obligation and of course we can’t give you an obligation, but it’s make many people happy if the project can go forward.
It needs time.
*Heart.
The spell check and grammar police could have a field day on your blog
Rushjob
It is actually the dutch version of the word, but you are right. I should put more time into checking my posts.
Something stinks here…they agreed to help, they took some time to get you some new files. the files were the same as the old ones via MD5? they stated they accidentally gave you the wrong files but, Why have they not just forwarded you the new files that they supposedly already compiled??
I think they are playing games and just baiting you guys but for what I have no idea. I hope I’m wrong but it still smells fishy….
September is the month when everybody are back at work hope allwinner tech will release a rocking linux driver
Communicating with Chinese manufacturers, especially with engineers and developers can be very difficult and frustrating, cos of the cultural and language barrier.
I have ask you before and i volunteer to go and visit the Allwinner headquarters to help you on this project, i live in Guangzhou and Allwinner factory is only 2 hours bus ride from my place.
From my experience if you visit any Chinese company and have a chat and a cup of Chinese tea with any of the bosses or managers will open more doors then any XDA thread will ever do.
Which reminds me; How did it go? We never followed up about it although they did started to “co-operate”
Well just let me know if you still want to deal with Allwinner on this and if you need my help.
Just to Follow, sorry i forget
Oufff I was about to drop the Mele in the bath… don’t lose so fast the hope. Pivos looks promising however!
Peter i hope you will say yes to the help of andropos , sure he will unlock the sitation.
I really wish to see you guys getting this running. It would be great

hmmm, let me be a bit clearer about something.
I can’t really be productive before Gimli has implemented the VPU libs into XBMC. We both have not yet received anything more then apologies up to know and besides my decision, Gimli does need to make his own decision about it. I leave Gimli alone at this matter as he need to decide for him self.
+1 (more if you need them

Hi Peter, Just to freshen up the blog and for sake of variety on information flow.
I propose:
1. An article on battery technology (Since you are chemical engineer, you might explain us in simple language)
2. Current Quad phones of year 2012 still marrying batteries of year 1990, something on this.
3. Why Motorola razor maxx XT910 battery 3300mAh looks small / feel light, but same capacity tablet batteries are bigger in size and heavier.
I think you got the Idea.
Thanks Peter
Max
Max,
Very good point! Fact is, I just reached out to a friend of mine to help me out with this blog. Now while he is not a chemist he runs the ICT department at the company I work for. He is really into RC type of stuff and also knows all this battery lithiumPolymer, Lithium X, etc. type of stuff.
I will ask him.
Thanks Peter, We really need to talk more about batteries to get them into main stream.
Right now the trend is very depressing, $500 phones and $300 tablets with $5 of battery. This thing need to be re- looked at.
Good Luck
Max
I only tested batteries for my model rc planes so no phones or tablets,
modern batteries come in different flavours.
there are the lsd nihm types like sanyo enelope, these got a low self discharche, low charge rate and low power dissipation. they are heavy and come only in thick round cells. not really usefull for heavy power consumers as phones and tablets. they are however great in childrens toys.
then we have the li-*** bateries
they come in different flavours, li-ion, lipo, lifepo4
first a couple of geek terms for the batteries
Every battery will have some speciffick characterics called with letters
e.g. a lipo with 1500mah 2S1P 25/50C and 5C charge rate
What can be read from this numbers:
1500mah is the capacity (duh)
2S1P means 2 cells connected in serie and 1 cell in paralel this will result in 2x 3.7 V = 7.4V nominal (fully charged this will be 2×4.2 = 8.4)
the 25/50C is the discharge rate in capacity the 1500mah can deliver a current from 25 x 1500 mah and peaks from 50 times its capacity
ofcourse the 5C charge rate means the battery can be charge in 1/5th of an hr.
later I will put in some more information of quality and cellstructure
well, fuck batteries. I’ve got one of these boxes http://www.new-digital-gadgets.com/a10-media-pc-did-in-the-uk and the only hope to make it useful is to install xbmc. Well I assume that having accelerated vpu integrated into xbmc it would be possible to have 1080p movies played stutter free and with proper color palette. And I also assume that it would be possible to have proper sound handling implemented in xbmc like hdmi pass through. Shitty android can only output pcm.
Do you want to upload some pictures of the PCB? I know this box, but have not yet seen the internals.
no I don’t. But check this out http://txlab.wordpress.com/2012/08/01/cvji-e212-one-more-cheap-allwinner-a10-media-player
Cool, that will do
http://www.myhdplayer.de/Android-TV-Box/Bluetimes-BT3584DA-Android-4-0-Smart-TV-Box.html
This ships in Europe and has the same specs as the pivos xios
I don’t know if you hear it, but the raspberry project have released the mpeg2 codec (do you have to pay for it about 3 euro), may we use this new to sollecitate allwinner? Simply with a new massive mail to let it know that if they don’t support the project we switch to other platform?
According to the XBMC thread there is some communication between gimli and Allwinner.
@Peter: Do you have any news for us?
Nothing more then what Gimli said on the IRC channel
Hi Peter,

You (& Gimli) are the hope of the whole f**kin community!! :O
..if you can’t..we won’t
And I cannot imagine beyond that..you were doing really good with the Mali400 MP stuff and now that Gimli has got his hands dirty with the VPU thingy..maybe you guys can strike a balanced deal with Allwinner tech ?
Not to mention Andropos’s help
Waiting for the ultimate community contribution in the OSS world 8),
Cheers!
no news? I suppose I should sell f-ing alllooser hardware
No news for the public yet (unfortunately)
But Allwinner proved to me last two/three weeks they are indeed really willing to get the job done, hence the final blow was given last night.
Does this mean something was delivered or not from AllWinner?
It mean; Stuff is still flying up and down
I guess we get something after AllWinner have finished getting Windows 8 running on their new quad-core.
Is this positive or negatief news??
There is some progress in porting of xbmc onto allwinner. Do you know something about it? http://liliputing.com/2012/11/early-builds-of-xbmc-for-linux-ported-to-allwinner-a10-devices.html
Yes, I know. I still following the Allwinner development. What started as a prove of concept grew to a “workable” solution.
Some implementations are still not optimal. I haven’t spoke with Gimli for a while as I was rather busy with the AMLogic project.
If I have some time this weekend, I might give it a proper look and build some stuff myself.
