Peter Steenbergen, also known online as “j1nx”. As one of the three founders of the OpenVoiceOS (OVOS) Foundation, he has been instrumental in developing and advancing the OVOS framework, an open-source, community-driven voice AI platform that prioritizes user privacy, security, and customization. With a deep passion for technology and innovation, I now have dedicated years to building and refining open-source solutions, ensuring that powerful voice-controlled interfaces remain accessible to all.

My work centers on developing open-source voice assistant infrastructure that runs locally on devices, without relying on cloud services. This includes operating system development, embedded system integration, and long-term maintenance of open-source voice platforms.

I am particularly interested in creating sustainable, privacy-first alternatives to proprietary voice assistant ecosystems.

From MycroftOS to OpenVoiceOS

My journey into the world of voice AI began with the creation of MycroftOS, a lightweight operating system based on Buildroot that was optimized for running the Mycroft AI voice assistant on embedded devices. My expertise in system optimizations and development played a key role in making open-source voice assistants more efficient and versatile.

However, the open-source voice assistant landscape faced a major shake-up when Mycroft AI, the company behind the Mycroft voice assistant, filed for bankruptcy. Mycroft AI had initially gained traction as a privacy-focused alternative to proprietary voice assistants, even securing significant funding. But mounting financial struggles, coupled with legal disputes, including a high-profile lawsuit with Tumey, LLP took a heavy toll on the company. By mid-2022, internal changes and financial instability led to the eventual downfall of Mycroft AI.

Rather than letting this setback hinder the progress of open-source voice technology, I and like-minded developers stepped up to carry the torch. Recognizing the need for a truly community-driven alternative, I co-founded the OVOS Foundation. OVOS was built on the principle of keeping voice AI open, modular, and transparent ensuring that developers and users retain full control over their voice assistants without compromising their privacy.

The Mission of OpenVoiceOS

The OVOS Foundation and its flagship OpenVoiceOS (OVOS) project provide a flexible and privacy-conscious voice assistant framework that can be deployed on various devices, from headless embedded systems to full-featured smart displays. With OVOS, developers can create custom voice interfaces that align with their specific needs, whether for home automation, robotics, or other AI-driven applications.

My dedication to the open-source philosophy extends beyond OVOS. I actively engage with the community through our blog, social media channels, and GitHub contributions, sharing insights, tutorials, and technical expertise.
